Failure in a Finnish nuclear power plant. Reactor in safety, no change in radioactivity levels outside the plant

Through the international systems of prompt notification of nuclear accidents, information has been received of an event that occurred in Unit 2 of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in Finland. The presence of a high level of radioactivity has been detected in the main steam line of the plant.

Unit 2 is an 890 megawatt BWR-type reactor and is located on the coast, in the south-western region of the country.
The reactor was automatically put in safety and, by the plant personnel, the checks on the causes of the anomaly were started.
Currently, the analyzes conducted on the reactor cooling water show no damage to the nuclear fuel contained in the core.
Furthermore, it was confirmed that the levels of radioactivity outside the plant have not changed. Unit 1 of the plant is also regularly operational.
ISIN is in constant contact with the Civil Protection Department, providing assessments on updates coming from international alert systems.
