Fire protection in nuclear plants, the public consultation is underway in view of the second European "Topical peer review"

The public consultation on the second Topical Peer Review (TPR), a community-level review process promoted by ENSREG, the Group of European regulatory bodies in the field of nuclear safety, is underway.

TPR I had as its theme the management of the aging of nuclear power plants and research reactors. TPR II has as its main theme the protection from fires, a subject of considerable importance for the safety of nuclear plants. The Italian decommissioning plants and research reactors will also be involved in the review process.

The draft documents relating to TPR II are available for comments from interested parties, including the public, on the ENSREG website at the link https://www.ensreg.eu/tpr-2-public-engagement.

The consultation period, which began on April 13, will end on May 27, 2022.

The revised and final versions of the draft documents will be submitted to ENSREG for approval in June 2022, in view of the subsequent implementation phase of the review process.
In 2014, the Council of the European Union adopted Directive 2014/87/EURATOM (amending the 2009 Nuclear Safety Directive) to incorporate the lessons learned following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.
Recognizing the importance of peer review for continuous improvement of nuclear safety, the Directive introduced a European peer review system, which takes place every six years.
The TPR II process requires each participating country to carry out a self-assessment of its approach to fire protection of nuclear plants, preparing a national report to be reviewed by other countries and identifying any good practices and improvements to be implemented.
The ISIN, fully involved in the process, has collaborated in the preparation of the consultation documents and will take care of the national report on the basis of the assessments that will be carried out by the exhibitors according to the technical specifications prepared. It will also participate, with its own experts, in the subsequent phases of the peer review, consisting of the revision of the national reports, with possible technical visits to the field, and of a final workshop.
