The Inspectorate participated, from 14 to 16 May, in the 46th annual meeting of ESARDA (European Safeguards Research and Development Association), the European Association for Research and Development in the field of nuclear safeguards.
Nuclear safeguards are the set of technical measures and checks that the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) applies on nuclear materials and technologies, in order to verify that they are exclusively intended for peaceful uses.
Founded in 1969 under the aegis of the European Commission, ESARDA brings together European organizations including competent national authorities, research bodies and sector operators. The association's mission is to promote and harmonize research and development in the nuclear safeguards sector.
ISIN took an active part in both the work of the "Implementation of Safeguards" WG, dedicated to sharing information between the various authorities on the application of nuclear safeguards, and in those of the "Final Disposal" WG, of particular interest for the aspects of nuclear safeguards linked to the disposal depots for radioactive waste and, therefore, to the italian National Repository.
During the meeting, held in Luxembourg, the Inspectorate experts illustrated the characteristics of the STRIMS platform, with a focus on the management of nuclear accounting information. Also to the attention of the participants was the creation of the National LOF (Location Outside Facilities), which provides for ISIN to take charge of the accounting obligations towards EURATOM for a group of small holders of nuclear materials.
ISIN's participation in this meeting underlines the national commitment in the field of nuclear safeguards.
