Nuclear safety, ISIN at the VI ENSREG Conference

War in Ukraine, attention to the issue of the safety of nuclear installations in the event of an armed conflict

The National Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection participates in the VI ENSREG Conference, underway in Brussels.

The meetings organized by the Group of Nuclear Safety Authorities, with the support of the European Commission, are an opportunity for discussion between the various independent nuclear safety authorities on their respective experiences and are aimed at promoting greater harmonization of activities.

The Italian delegation to the ENSREG Conference is made up of the coordinator of the ISIN Council and president, since 2017, of the ENSREG Working Group on Radioactive Waste Management and Decommissioning, Stefano Laporta, and Lamberto Matteocci.

A particularly awaited topic of the first day was that of the safety of nuclear installations in the event of a conflict: during his speech Massimo Garriba, Deputy Director General for Energy of the European Commission, highlighted how the situation in Ukraine has brought out the need to update the instruments of international law.

The ongoing conflict was also at the center of the speech by Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the IAEA, who reiterated the value of the collaboration between IAEA and ENSREG and recalled the constant commitment of the Agency towards Ukraine. IAEA  organized three support missions and coordinated international assistance.

Among the topics on the agenda during the two days of work, nuclear safety in times of serious crisis, with the ongoing war in Ukraine and the pandemic, transparency and public participation in waste management and the long-term operation of power plants nuclear power, regulatory challenges.

The participation of the Inspectorate in the activities carried out by international organizations operating in the sector, in particular ENSREG, represents one of its most important institutional tasks.

The event is broadcast in web streaming (the link on the ENSREG website https://www.ensreg.eu/ensreg-conferences).
