Radiation protection, students of La Sapienza in Rome visiting the ISIN laboratories
The students of the Energy Engineering course of study, Nuclear specialization, of the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering of the La Sapienza University of Rome, yesterday visited the ISIN laboratories in Castel Romano.
Led by the head of the laboratories, Leandro Magro, and their "Radiation Protection" teacher and expert in radiation protection of the Inspectorate, Massimo Altavilla, the students were able to learn about the activities carried out within the CTBT, the Treaty on Mass at Total Ban on Nuclear Experiments, adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 10 September 1996.
During the visit, they were shown the radiometric equipment used by the ISIN staff and some gamma spectra analysis exercises were carried out, acquired with the aforementioned radiometric instrumentation.
In 2016, the ISIN laboratory for measuring radioactivity in atmospheric particulate matter, called ITL10, became part of the International Monitoring System (IMS) created under the said Treaty.
The international monitoring system consists of a set of detection networks: seismic, infrasonic, hydroacoustic and radioactivity dispersed in the atmosphere.
The ITL10 laboratory is supported by 12 certified laboratories (out of a total of 16 planned in all continents) which represent an example of the highest specialization for this type of measurement, capable of detecting the effects of a nuclear event anywhere in the world. occur, also establishing the date of occurrence.
The director of the Inspectorate, Maurizio Pernice, expressed his satisfaction with the involvement shown: "For the students visiting yesterday, this was a precious opportunity to find out more about scientific research and the operation of our laboratories. During the meeting there was not only a transfer of knowledge on our part: the exchange was reciprocal, because the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by our guests represent an incentive for us to repeat experiences of this type in the future " .
