Radioactive waste management and decommissioning, the 38th meeting of the ENSREG Safety Working Group kicks off

The Working Group on radioactive waste management and decommissioning, set up within the ENSREG (European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group),  meets on 12 and 13 October.

The meeting, which took place via video conference, is conducted by the president of the Working Group and coordinator of the ISIN Council, Stefano Laporta, and by Mario Dionisi, ISIN responsible for the Radioactive waste management and material transport.

Participants discuss various issues of common interest, carrying out a technical analysis of the indicators used to assess the state of implementation of national programs on radioactive waste management and of the procedures for declaring inventories to international organizations and, in particular, in implementation of Directive 2011/70/Euratom on the safe management of radioactive waste. This, in order to prepare specific technical positions of ENSREG useful to Member States for the implementation of the obligations established by the Directive.

In particular, the discussion deals with the work program for the next three-year period 2021-23 where, among the proposals, we highlight: a review of the experiences of the EU countries in defining the parameters that influence the path for the completion of decommissioning activities and a comparative analysis on the control of radioactive waste management of medical-sanitary origin.
