The director of ISIN Maurizio Pernice presented this morning in Vienna - in the opening session of the 7th Review Conference of the Joint Convention - the report on the italian situation by addressing the policy and strategy aspects of the management of irradiated fuel and radioactive waste.
The director illustrated the main regulatory changes introduced into national legislation, focusing on the new "Strims" waste traceability system which came into force at the beginning of 2022. The path started for the localization of the site for the national deposit was also outlined, with the publication of the CNAPI and the National Seminar held in recent months; an assessment was also made of the state of the activities for the safety of previous waste and dismantling. Another issue that has been addressed is the issue of completing the fuel transfer activities in France for reprocessing. The event was also an opportunity to illustrate the ongoing process of strengthening the Italian Nuclear Safety Authority.
The work of the Convention was initiated by the President of the Convention Review Meeting, the Swiss Hans Wanner, and by the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi
The objective of the Convention is to promote the achievement and maintenance of a high level of safety in the management of irradiated fuel and radioactive waste, through the strengthening of national measures and international cooperation. Into consideration of this objective, the Director General of the IAEA underlined how the topics covered by the Convention are closely related to the particular moment linked to the situation of the war in Ukraine; an inevitable reference given the international situation and which will find in Vienna an important opportunity for discussion given the presence of the Russian and Ukrainian delegations.

The Convention requires States parties to prepare reports every three years on the state of implementation of the obligations contracted with the ratification of the Convention, submitting these reports to a peer review mechanism that takes place in specific conferences, also every three years, organized at the IAEA. The works of the Joint Convention will end on 8 July.
