Casaccia, anomaly would have occurred during the mask removal phase.

The radioactive isotope identified during the tests carried out on the worker is not plutonium but americium. No internal contamination of other operators and the environment.

The second ISIN inspection took place yesterday at the SOGIN Plutonium plant in the Casaccia Research Center, where on November 21st an episode of internal contamination of a worker occurred during the inspection and repackaging of radioactive waste.

The Carabinieri of the Environmental Protection Unit, the Labor Inspectorate Unit and the Cassia Carabinieri Company also took part in the inspection.

During the investigations carried out, it was verified that the internal contamination suffered by the worker was mainly due to "americium" and not "plutonium", as had been indicated by the media in recent days. Furthermore, the “committed effective dose” for the worker is around 6.2 millisieverts: based on this estimate, as well as the additional information acquired, it is determined that the annual exposure limit set at 20 millisieverts is not exceeded.

During the new inspection, further elements were acquired and the contaminated worker, some operators of the team present on November 21 and the management of the plant were interviewed.

With regard to the reconstruction of what happened, the internal contamination – verified with the analysis of excretions and urine – would be attributable to an anomaly that occurred during the removal of the interofacial mask, at the end of the operations during the undressing phase.
