“EU-Italy Energy Days”, ISIN in Turin at the symposium on European energy policies
The “EU-Italy Energy Days” symposium entitled "How to achieve near-sero emissions by 2050" is underway in Turin. The event, organized by the Polytechnic University of Turin in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, the Ministry of Universities and Research and the European Commission, represents an opportunity for representatives of Italian ministries and European institutions to discuss technologically innovative solutions for the implementation of sustainable energy policies with international scientists.
Two days of work, which will end today, to which the director of the Inspectorate, Francesco Campanella, has been invited to participate. Institutional and business leaders met for the panel on “The central role of regulation and stakeholder engagement for nuclear energy and the case of fusion energy”, during which Director Campanella illustrated ISIN’s contribution to the debate on a possible new nuclear energy production strategy.
“ISIN, as the Italian regulatory authority for nuclear safety and radiation protection, is actually focused on two basic objectives”, Campanella clarified. “First, today: to continue to ensure the adoption of national technical standards well aligned with recognized international guidelines for our electrical plants undergoing decommissioning procedures, for our research reactors and also for our plants operating for medical or industrial purposes using ionizing radiation sources. Second, future-oriented, that is, to be ready for a possible turning point in energy policy and to start planning tomorrow’s licensing and inspection activities”.
The Director also reiterated the importance of constant and constructive dialogue, both with stakeholders and with other regulatory authorities. This, while always maintaining its independence and the vocation for maximum transparency in carrying out institutional activities.
For the European Commission, energy and climate policy is a central element for the EU industrial strategy and efforts are now also focused on policies aimed at effective decarbonisation, the reduction of energy prices and the implementation of small modular reactors (SMR).
The debate on the return to nuclear power in our country is more topical than ever. During the panel, Director Campanella was asked what ISIN's expectations are.
"We are waiting for the Government's decision on the nuclear energy strategy and the proposed regulatory framework. We hope to enhance our experience and our skills and we completely rely on Minister Pichetto's ability to do his best for our country. ISIN is the Italian Regulatory Authority and I am sure that our professional skills and sensibilities will remain useful and valuable also in the near future”.
