ISIN appoints 4 new inspectors
The number of ISIN inspectors has risen to 13. Achieving this goal represents an important step for the Inspectorate, given the protective role represented by its inspection and supervisory activities.
Inspections typically involve nuclear facilities, research reactors, facilities and activities related to the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, nuclear materials, the passive physical protection of nuclear materials and facilities, the use of ionizing radiation sources, the transport of radioactive materials, and environmental radioactivity.
"The role of the inspector is central to ISIN", commented Director Francesco Campanella during the appointment ceremony. "Inspection activity is one of the Agency's primary focuses, and I hope that the role of inspector will gain increasing prominence in the future. The 2026 Inspection Plan will be ready by the end of December, and I am confident that the newly appointed colleagues will carry out their work with responsibility and competence".
ISIN inspectors have the right to access any site where activities under their institutional oversight are carried out and can conduct all investigations relevant to nuclear safety and the protection of workers, the public, and the environment. In carrying out their duties, they act as judicial police officers.
The inspections they conduct are aimed at ensuring the compliance of plants, installations, activities, and operations with regulatory and technical requirements for nuclear safety and radiation protection; verifying the compliance of the operation or management of plants and installations with the conditions and requirements of the nuclear safety and radiation protection authorization; assessing the level of radiation protection on-site; and encouraging authorized parties to strive to achieve the best possible conditions for radiation protection.
