ISIN at the Radiation and Health event organized by the ISS
The National Center for Health Protection and Computational Physics (PRORA) of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) organized the "Radiation and Health" event from December 17 to 19, to present the ISS's work in the field of ionizing radiation.
The session dedicated to "Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies" was co-moderated by ISIN and the ISS. The Inspectorate also provided high-profile technical contributions through two keynote presentations: an analysis of the current status and future prospects of radioactivity monitoring networks and an update on the recent activities of the Data Processing and Evaluation Center, which plays a key role in managing nuclear and radiological emergencies.
The event was dedicated to the memory of Professor Gloria Campos Venuti, a pioneer of radiation protection in Italy. His vision led to the creation of regional laboratories for monitoring environmental radioactivity and the first national survey of radioactivity in homes, laying the foundation for the country's modern safety infrastructure.
In addition to the exchange of Italian excellence, the conference hosted experts from international organizations such as the WHO, ICRP, IARC, and ICNIRP. The debate focused on the optimized use of radiation in medicine and a scientific study of the effects of low doses of ionizing radiation.
