Health and safety: ISIN Director Campanella visits IEO

Director Campanella paid an official visit to the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) in Milan. This was a useful opportunity to network and gain insight into the Institute's activities, both in terms of research and clinical objectives. After a meeting with CEO Mauro Melis, the meeting, organized by the scientific management, also included the head of the radiotherapy department and those responsible for design and radiation protection.
Together with them, and in the presence of technical staff, including those from the clinical engineering and medical physics departments, aspects more closely related to the Inspectorate's areas of expertise were also addressed, with a specific focus on proton therapy activities, also viewed in relation to their significant clinical implications.
The visit was of great mutual interest: in particular, the Director of ISIN demonstrated—while respecting the Inspectorate's independent nature and role as a regulatory authority—his willingness to listen carefully to the description of the many specific features that characterize activities with a highly significant social impact. In this regard, it becomes even more essential to exercise control and oversight that is in no way disconnected from either knowledge of the issues themselves or an awareness of the scope and complexity of the issues that, in institutions like the IEO, are addressed daily by the staff working there.
