Nuclear power, risks and opportunities: experts, universities and institutions meet in Rome.

The conference "Nuclear between Risk and Opportunity: Safety, Energy, and Social Protection," organized by the Interregional Order of Chemists and Physicists of Lazio, Umbria, Abruzzo, and Molise, in collaboration with the University of Tor Vergata, was held in Rome.

The day provided a valuable opportunity for dialogue between the professional world, academia, military and civilian institutions, the healthcare system, and civil defense, to jointly build a culture of radiological and nuclear safety that is simultaneously scientifically rigorous, operationally effective and socially responsible.

The keynote address by ISIN Director Francesco Campanella focused on the key aspects of current and future risk scenarios in the nuclear sector, highlighting how a culture of safety in this field must be consolidated based on the great tradition of expertise and professional sensitivity achieved, particularly over the last 40 years, by radiation protection, a science that in Italy boasts outstanding professionals who provide valuable contributions in its various fields of operational application.

Using the broad public debate on the possible return to a national nuclear program to better educate citizens, as well as institutions, about the high level of Italian radiation protection, as well as the value of professionals such as medical physicists and radiation protection experts, is an unmissable opportunity to understand that any future decisions will necessarily be based on a deeper and more definitive understanding of the many risk scenarios that are already being managed optimally, applying a system of rigorous internationally defined rules. Italy actively and esteemedly participates in these rules, ensuring their implementation—including through ISIN—throughout the country.
