Radiation protection and surveillance: The successful ISIN – Sapienza Study Day, between technology and orientation. The recording of the event and slides are available.
The study day, titled "Natural and Artificial Radioactivity: Radiation Sources and ISIN Controls," was held yesterday in the Cloister Hall of the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome. The event, organized in close collaboration with the University, offered a comprehensive overview of the technical and regulatory challenges related to radiation management in Italy.
The opening remarks were addressed by institutional greetings. Professor Gianfranco Caruso, Director of the Department of Electrical and Energy Engineering at Sapienza, and Dr. Francesco Campanella, Director of ISIN, emphasized a crucial point: the need for open dialogue that extends beyond the circle of industry insiders and reaches out to younger generations. Both emphasized how the direct involvement of university students was a distinctive feature of the day. Addressing the audience of future engineers and researchers, Caruso and Campanella emphasized the importance of radiation protection for public safety, but also as a potential magnet for academic and professional careers, fostering new talent interested in the topics introduced by the event. Radiation protection, encompassing both workplace safety and environmental monitoring, requires highly specialized skills and technical profiles ready to work in fields ranging from healthcare to industry and research. These fields are constantly evolving and capable of proposing innovative challenges, which require young professionals who are able to stay ahead of the curve.
The day was divided into two high-profile technical sessions: the first focused on radiation sources, with in-depth discussions on natural radioactivity, the use of x-ray machines in industrial and medical settings, and the critical management of radioactive waste and contaminated sites; The second session focused on ISIN controls, with specific emphasis on the National Radon Action Plan, NORM practices, environmental surveillance in the research and decommissioning sectors, and regulatory frameworks.
The event concluded with the hope that this collaboration between the University and the competent regulatory authority will further consolidate, fostering the transfer of essential knowledge for the protection of the population and the environment, and inspiring a new generation of experts in the field.
