30th AIRM Conference, Campanella (ISIN): "High-level expertise in radiation protection is a solid foundation for informed choices"

The thirtieth national conference of the Italian Association of Medical Radiation Protection is currently underway in Sestri Levante, titled "Medical Radiation Protection from Chernobyl to AI: Learning from the Past, Preparing for the Future."

In the keynote address scheduled to open the conference, Director Campanella outlined the current situation regarding the prospects associated with the provisions of the enabling bill currently under discussion in the Chamber of Deputies. This is an opportunity to reflect on how the experiences and expertise gained in recent decades in the field of radiation protection can provide a solid foundation for the country to better understand, enabling it to better plan the actions that will arise from the decisions that the Government and Parliament will propose to citizens.

Questioning the risk scenarios associated with new nuclear technologies, which will eventually lead to the revitalization of nuclear power, will only truly be meaningful—Campanella emphasized—through a simultaneous promotion of greater awareness of the ability to manage current risk scenarios, related to both civilian nuclear power plants and installations that use ionizing radiation sources. This ability has already been developed in our country, which highlights the extremely high professionalism of the scientific community and Italy's solid commitment to the IAEA safety standards system.
