IRRS Mission on Lithuania’s Nuclear Safety Regulatory System

The Integrated Regulatory Review Service mission to Lithuania, organized by the IAEA to review the country’s nuclear and radiation safety regulatory framework, concluded on 29 May.

The IRRS team included 12 experts from Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Sweden and Italy, as well as two IAEA staff members. Two experts from ISIN participated in the mission, one of whom served as an observer.

Taking part in the peer review process allows national regulatory and oversight systems to be benchmarked against IAEA safety standards. It’s a key requirement for maintaining high safety levels worldwide and a valuable opportunity to share knowledge, experience, and good practices among regulators.

This was the third IRRS mission involving ISIN experts in recent months, following the reviews conducted in Kenya in October 2025 and Japan in January 2026.

Through exchanges of knowledge and experience with the IRRS team and Lithuania’s regulatory bodies — the State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) and the Radiation Protection Centre (RSC) of the Ministry of Health — ISIN gained additional experience and prepared effectively for the next IRRS mission in Italy, which will take place from 22 November to 2 December 2026.

An overview of the main conclusions from the 12-day mission in Lithuania is available in the IAEA press release:
