The Rimini Meeting concludes today. ISIN: the narrative on nuclear is changing
ISIN's presence at the Rimini 2026 Meeting concluded with an extremely positive outcome. Through a comprehensive program of thematic meetings, hosted in Piazza MASE from August 21st to 26th, the independent regulatory authority engaged with citizens, students, technicians, and institutions, bringing radiation protection, nuclear safety, and environmental monitoring to the forefront.
ISIN's participation responded to a fundamental and emerging need in contemporary society, stemming from the profoundly changing narrative on nuclear power. This is a historic opportunity, especially in Italy, to promote a more informed and robust culture in the very areas that represent the Inspectorate's primary institutional focus.
"Attending the Rimini Meeting was crucial for providing civil society with clear, understandable information, conveyed in an engaging manner, and based on objective and scientifically sound data," commented Francesco Campanella, Director of the Inspectorate. "Addressing issues related to ISIN competencies today requires a shift in perspective compared to the more traditional approach used to date when discussing "nuclear."
It's no longer just a matter of fearing the implications of scenarios linked to more or less imminent energy choices, but also of addressing scenarios that are already real and raising civil society's awareness of the challenges we have been able to overcome every day for years in the management of radioactivity and the use of ionizing radiation sources. This also helps foster real growth toward a "culture of sustainable safety" that is truly everyone's heritage and is based—not on fear—but on knowledge."
During the six-day meeting, the Inspectorate's experts explored crucial issues for public health and safety: radioactive waste management, radon gas risk measurement and prevention, radiological and nuclear emergency management, traceability, and the STRIMS platform.
The Inspectorate also hosted a talk on "Everyday Radioactivity" by Dr. Franco Cioce, curator of the Museum of Radioactivity.
