ISIN at the Global Fusion Policy Summit 2026: international cooperation on nuclear fusion takes center stage

The Global Fusion Policy Summit 2026 took place yesterday at London’s historic Mansion House. This international event focused on the development of fusion energy and prospects for collaboration among governments, scientific institutions and the industrial sector. It was organized by the UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the US Department of Energy (DOE), with the support of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA).

The National Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ISIN) is participating by invitation, bringing the Italian perspective to an international dialogue increasingly focused on establishing the technological, regulatory and industrial conditions necessary for fusion development.

The summit aims to strengthen international dialogue on a technology considered strategic for the future of energy systems. Key objectives include exploring new opportunities for international collaboration, sharing progress in research and technology, and discussing the strategies needed to advance fusion toward practical energy applications.

The event brings together representatives from governments, national laboratories, universities, research centers, and industry, fostering direct dialogue among the various stakeholders involved in fusion development. The program features introductory remarks, panel discussions, presentations on research activities, and opportunities for discussion and networking, allowing participants to discuss the sector's outlook with organizations and leaders driving its evolution.

Particular attention is therefore paid not only to scientific progress but also to the conditions required for the safe and effective global deployment of fusion energy. International dialogue is becoming increasingly important at a time when various countries are accelerating investments, research programs, and industrial initiatives aimed at transforming fusion from a promising experimental technology into a component of the future energy mix.

The Global Fusion Policy Summit 2026 thus represents a key forum for policy, scientific, and industrial discussion at a decisive juncture for fusion. ISIN’s participation also reflects Italy’s interest in the international development of a technology that—beyond its scientific and engineering challenges—raises significant issues regarding safety, regulation, and future integration into energy systems, while confirming the Inspectorate’s full commitment, including from a long-term perspective.
