Cooperation, safety and skills development: ISIN at the 70th IAEA General Conference

The 70th General Conference, attended by experts from the Inspectorate, concludes today at the IAEA in Vienna.
The Conference, bringing together representatives from the Agency’s 181 Member States, serves as a key forum for international dialogue and cooperation on nuclear safety and radiation protection—issues of particular importance in the current global context.

ISIN representatives—acting as Italy’s regulatory authority—participated in numerous meetings, exchanges, and in-depth discussions alongside other members of the Italian delegation and delegations from participating states.
Activities included a presentation at the Italian Permanent Representation pavilion in Vienna showcasing the Inspectorate’s work on regulatory reviews and oversight regarding the use of ionizing radiation sources in healthcare, as well as capacity-building initiatives aimed at ensuring the adequacy, training, and skills development of ISIN’s professional staff.

Bilateral meetings with the Belgian (FANC) and French (ASN) nuclear safety authorities were of particular significance; these aimed to strengthen mutual collaboration by establishing cooperation agreements on various topics—ranging from radioactive waste management to new nuclear technologies—within the fields of nuclear safety and radiation protection.
During a side event dedicated to the White Paper on facilitating the safe and secure transport of radioactive material—drafted by the IAEA’s Denial of Shipment Working Group (DoS WG)—ISIN representatives reaffirmed Italy’s commitment and full support for the recommendations developed by the Working Group to mitigate this issue. Following the meetings, ISIN representatives also participated yesterday in the Senior Safety and Security Regulators Meeting—an event for the heads of regulatory authorities aimed at fostering international dialogue on key nuclear safety and security issues, as well as on emerging challenges within their respective areas of competence.
