Harmonize the safety levels of nuclear research reactors at Community level. This has been the subject of discussion since this morning at the ISIN headquarters, during the meeting of the Working Group on Research Reactors (WGRR) of WENRA, the Association of European nuclear safety regulators.
This is the second meeting of the WGRR that will take place in presence, after the long period of the pandemic.
The works were opened by the director of ISIN, Maurizio Pernice, who underlined the importance of the meeting of the Working Group and of the participation of the Inspectorate, representing Italy, at WENRA.
“In our country – Pernice said- we have 4 operational research reactors. Ensuring high levels of safety in this field, as well as in the management of radioactive waste and in decommissioning activities, represents one of the main missions that the law has entrusted to ISIN".
The three days of work will concern the updating of the ongoing checks on the compliance of the national reference regulations with the so-called SRLs, Safety Reference Levels, which WENRA, in particular the WGRR itself, identified and issued in 2020 for the purposes of harmonization in within the Community, safety levels for research reactors.
The WGRR will also discuss the results of peer reviews, which will allow for the identification of any gaps in the national regulatory frameworks. This path aims at the definition of national action plans that each country will adopt to align its own regulation with the safety requirements promoted by WENRA.
