“Nuclear safety and radiation protection criteria for the management of radioactive waste”, ISIN publishes the Technical Guide n. 33.

The Technical Guide establishes the safety and radiation protection criteria that must be respected, according to a graduated approach, for the correct and safe management of radioactive waste, taking into account the nature and radiological risk associated with each type of waste and defines the minimum requirements of radioactive waste artifacts for the purpose of their management in the storage facilities at the production sites, as well as their future transferability to the surface disposal facility or to the long-term temporary storage facility of the National Repository.
The indications contained in the publication have been elaborated, in particular, so that the subjects operating in the radioactive waste management sector take them into account for the purpose of preparing the projects to be submitted for authorization and the conduct of the related activities.
The Inspectorate, as the competent regulatory authority in the field of nuclear safety and radiation protection, has drawn up the Technical Guide on the basis of the most up-to-date international standards on the subject, in particular incorporating the recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations (IAEA) on the treatment and conditioning of radioactive waste and disposal.
The Technical Guide n. 33 also makes it possible to fulfill the commitment undertaken by ISIN to transfer the safety requirements developed by the European Association of Nuclear Safety Authorities WENRA into national regulation.
The document, submitted to public consultation in 2022, replaces the Technical Guide n. 26 "Management of radioactive waste" of ENEA-DISP of 1987.
