Safe transport of radioactive material, the IAEA publishes two Technical Guides

The Safety Technical Guide "Advisory Material for the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material (2018 Edition) No.SSG-26 (Rev. 1)", which updates the previous edition of 2012, contains information and provides insights that allow better application of the safety requirements relating to the national and international transport of radioactive material established in the "Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material" 2018 Edition Safety Standards Series No. SSR-6 (Rev.1).

As already defined in the IAEA SSR-6 Regulations (Rev.1), transport includes all operations and conditions associated with the handling of radioactive material, including the design, manufacture and maintenance of packaging and preparation, shipment, handling, transport, storage during transport, dispatch after storage and receipt at the final destination of the packages.

The Technical Guide SSG-26 (Rev.1) represents a particularly useful tool for all operators involved in the various transport phases as, for each safety requirement or provision reported in the paragraphs of the IAEA SSR-6 Regulation (Rev.1) provides both the rationale and the methods to satisfy what is required in the requirement / provision.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has also published the SSG-66 Technical Safety Guide "Format and Content of the Package Design Safety Report for the Transport of Radioactive Material", which provides recommendations on the preparation of a Safety Report for Package models to demonstrate the compliance of the design of a packaging model for the transport of radioactive material with the requirements established in the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material ”2018 Edition SSR-6 (Rev.1). This Technical Guide is aimed at operators who require the approval of packaging models (when the packaging models are subject to the approval of the competent authority) and for designers and / or shippers of packaging (when the packaging models do not require the approval by the competent authority).
