ITREC plant of Trisaia (MT), ISIN completes the checks on the removal operations of the underground monolith containing radioactive waste.

With an inspection conducted yesterday, on the occasion of the operations carried out by SO.G.I.N. for the transfer of the last of the 4 wells of the underground monolith containing radioactive waste from the pit into which it was placed towards one of the depots of the site of the ITREC plant, the inspection activities of the Inspectorate were completed on the entire reclamation activity that started some years ago.

The set of operations, very complex and unique in their kind, ended with the safe positioning of the 4 wells resulting from the sectioning of the monolith, each packaged in its own steel structure, inside one of the depots of the site.

During the inspection, ISIN noted the limited extent and the absence of radiological consequences for the population and the environment of the anomaly communicated by SO.G.I.N. after the transfer of the third well. This anomaly consisted in the leakage of a small quantity of liquid, a situation expected and assessed in the operations project. In particular, ISIN noted the actions taken by SO.G.I.N. to remove this liquid and the radiometric checks carried out, which confirmed the absence of a contamination of relevance for the population and the environment and for workers.

Environmental samples have been acquired for independent radiometric determinations that will be performed by ARPA Basilicata.

With the completion of the monolith removal operations, SO.G.I.N. can now proceed with the implementation of the ICPF project, aimed at the treatment and conditioning of the liquid waste present in the plant, whose authorization process has already been completed in the past years.
