Guaranteeing the transparency of information to stakeholders and the security of a system based on technical standards that adequately take into account the needs of the population: ISIN actively participates in the activities of international bodies, aimed at deepening knowledge regarding technical standards and technologies.
In the 1980s, with the sudden change in Italy's energy strategy and the consequent abandonment of the nuclear source, the country began the decommissioning of nuclear installations that were no longer needed. However, the debate on nuclear power has recently rekindled, involving exponents of the scientific and industrial world.
In fact, the conference "Nuclear power in Italy, scenarios and perspectives" was held today at the Chamber of Deputies, during which the evolution towards nuclear energy in Italy was analysed, from a scientific, regulatory and economic point of view.
At the institutional table, also the director of ISIN, Maurizio Pernice, who illustrated the many activities carried out, including at an international level, the performance of which allows the enrichment of the baggage of knowledge and experience, indispensable both in a national and cross-border context.
Pernice also explained how important ISIN's participation in international peer reviews, in the context of which, with other countries, safety checks are carried out on active nuclear plants.
Equally important is the European partnership on small modular reactors (SMR), which aims to identify the best technologies and the best authorization procedures.
“We do this regardless of the existence or otherwise of nuclear power in Italy - explained Pernice. “The presence or possible construction of additional cross-border nuclear power plants has inevitable repercussions on our country. Always up-to-date technical skills are essential to carry out environmental impact assessments that guarantee the country system the highest possible level of safety".
During the meeting, the need to support nuclear research emerged, in particular the new generation and the one deriving from fusion, a real challenge for the future. Furthermore, it is essential to focus on university training and invest in building not only technical but also managerial skills.
However, the renewed interest in nuclear energy as a source of energy supply requires solving the critical issues connected to the management of radioactive waste: "In September, the provision with which the government will officially open the self-candidacy of the territories to accommodate the National Repository for radioactive waste", recalled Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security.
