Nuclear safety, decommissioning and supplies to Ukraine, yesterday the 52nd ENSREG meeting. ISIN among participants.

Implementation of the Euratom Directive on nuclear safety, peer review missions of regulatory and control systems and the safe management of radioactive waste, the process of the second Topical Peer Review, under preparation, dedicated to investigating the issue of fire protection in nuclear installations, which will take place in the second half of 2023 and in 2024: these are some of the topics on the agenda, addressed yesterday during the 52nd meeting of ENSREG (European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group), which met yesterday at the offices of the European Commission in Brussels.

The meeting of the Group of Nuclear Safety Authorities of the EU Member States, established in 2007 by the European Commission, was attended by Dr. Stefano Laporta, Coordinator of the Consulta, on behalf of ISIN, with the support of engineers Mario Dionisi and Lamberto Matteocci.

On the Italian side, the status of the activities of the ENSREG working group n'2 was presented, dedicated to the issues of radioactive waste management and decommissioning, for which the functions of President are performed by Dr. Laporta, as Italian member of ENSREG.

During the meeting, the President of the Ukrainian Nuclear Safety Authority also intervened, to update on the current situation at the Zaporizhzhya plant and in particular on the actions implemented for the maintenance of the supplies necessary to ensure maintenance and management in plant safety, freeing itself from the manufacturing and service industries of the Russian Federation.

The various support initiatives for Ukraine in the field of emergency management and in the supply of materials and components were presented by the Commission.

Another relevant issue addressed during the meeting concerned the state of the partnership activities promoted by the European Commission, with the participation of the design and manufacturing industry, exhibitors and other stakeholders. This also with the involvement of the Safety Authorities, each in compliance with their own role, for the development and construction of small size modular reactors (SMRs) within the Community. In this regard, the activities carried out within the partnership to promote joint safety assessments are of particular importance, ensuring high safety standards for these reactors.
