Nuclear safety, ISIN follows the situation in Ukraine and enhances the detection network with new control units

The National Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ISIN) is following the evolution of events in Ukraine with extreme attention and concern in recent days, with reference to the conditions of nuclear installations and, in particular, of the Zaporizhzya power plant.
The news, which arrives from international channels and from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reassures that "the monitoring of the radiological situation of the plant has not detected any deviation from normal operating conditions". However, the bombings of recent days, reports the IAEA, "have practically violated all seven essential pillars of nuclear safety, including those relating to physical integrity, the functioning of the safety and protection systems of a nuclear power plant, personnel and external electricity supply systems ". There is, therefore, a well-founded concern about the evolution of the situation.
In conjunction with this complex international scenario, ISIN is strengthening its detection system with the installation of highly sensitive control units, a type of instrumentation that until yesterday did not exist in our country and which is added to the monitoring networks and ready existing alarm. In recent days, the first REMRAD station with very high sensitivity was installed and started up, in the test phase. The station, hosted by the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics of Sgonico (Trieste), represents a significant evolution of the ISIN automatic network for monitoring environmental radioactivity and one of the most prominent elements of the national alert and activation system of the National plan for the management of radiological and nuclear emergencies.
