Safe transport of radioactive material, ISIN in the works of TRANSSC, the IAEA committee

The 47th meeting of the TRANSSC (Transport Safety Standards Committee), a committee made up of experts appointed by the Member States, took place in Vienna, at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The meeting focused on the periodic review of the IAEA “Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material” SSR-6 (Rev. 1) 2018 Edition, a process launched by the Agency secretariat in 2021.

The Inspectorate participated with two experts in the field of safe transport of radioactive material.

During the meeting, were examined and discussed within "thematic" working groups, the proposed amendments presented by the Member States to the IAEA "Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material" SSR-6 (Rev. 1) 2018 Edition and on the IAEA “Advisory Material for the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material” SSG-26 (Rev.1) 2018 Edition.

In particular, ISIN experts took part in the "Package Performance and Assessment" (TTEG - PPA) working group, which examined and discussed the proposed changes relating to the requirements and performance of packages.

The IAEA “Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material” SSR-6 (Rev. 1) 2018 Edition constitutes the reference for all national and international technical regulations for the transport of radioactive material and is subject to periodic review, according to the “2021 Quality Plan for Review of Regulations” (Rev. 6), which takes into account operational experience and technological advances in this sector.

The results of the Working Group's evaluations were shared and discussed in the plenary session and, based on the results of the latter, the drafts of the aforementioned SSR-6 and SSG-26 were reviewed and approved.
