"Safety criteria for the management of radioactive waste", ISIN publishes the proposal of the Technical Guide n. 33.

The document in public consultation until 28 September 2022

The Technical Guide proposal n. 33 establishes the criteria that must be respected for a correct management of radioactive waste, taking into account the nature and radiological risk associated with each type of waste, and defines the minimum requirements for radioactive waste artifacts for their acceptance to the disposal or long-term temporary storage.

The Inspectorate, as the competent national Authority in the field of nuclear safety and radiation protection, considered it appropriate to issue the Technical Guide no. 33, which updates and replaces the Technical Guide no. 26 "Radioactive waste management", as a national reference to be applied for the various phases of radioactive waste management that can be classified according to the five categories of the Decree of 7 August 2015 "Classification of radioactive waste, pursuant to Article 5 of the Legislative Decree of 4 March 2014 , no. 45 ".

Drafted on the basis of the most up-to-date international standards on the subject, it incorporates in particular the recommendations of the IAEA, the International Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations, and the safety requirements developed by WENRA, the European Association of Nuclear Safety Authorities, on the treatment and conditioning of radioactive waste and on disposal. The Technical Guide n. 33 also allows to fulfill the commitment made by ISIN to transfer the WENRA requirements into national regulations.
The proposed Technical Guide, published on the ISIN website, is now subject to consultation with the public and interested companies, entities and organizations, for a period of 60 days. Any comments, observations and justified proposals for amendments may be sent by 28 September 2022.
