Technical Guide n. 30, the final version is online

The final version of the Technical Guide n.30 has been published on the ISIN website.

The document collects the objectives, criteria and general safety and radiation protection requirements for the design, construction, operation and decommissioning of temporary storage facilities for radioactive waste and irradiated fuel.

While waiting for the National Repository to be built and put into operation, the existing and newly built structures, where radioactive waste needs to be temporarily stored, must meet appropriate technical safety requirements; in particular, the adaptation of existing storage facilities must be ensured.

The Technical Guide n. 30 of the ISIN identifies the technical criteria to be applied and implemented in the construction and adaptation of temporary repositories to ensure that radioactive waste is safely stored until it is delivered to the disposal plant and to ensure the isolation of radionuclides from the biosphere and the more low level of exposure possible for workers and the general public.

The consultation phase ended on January 25, allowing the acquisition of observations, comments and proposals from the administrations, bodies and operators concerned as well as from citizens and other stakeholders.

Its publication comes after the examination, conducted by the Inspectorate, of the more than 300 comments, observations and motivated proposals for amendments received from 14 institutional subjects, organizations and operators in the sector.
