The "Annual Report of the ISIN Director" sent to the Government and Parliament

The "Annual report of the Director of ISIN to the Government and Parliament on the activities carried out by ISIN and on the state of nuclear safety in the national territory" was sent to the President of the Council of Ministers and the Presidents of the Chamber and Senate.
This is the report of the first year of activity of the Inspectorate, an act required by current legislation, which also takes into account the results attributable to activities prior to 2019, completed or in progress during the year.
The state of nuclear safety and radiation protection in Italy, resulting from the investigation, control and monitoring activities carried out by ISIN in 2019 and from the analysis of the indicators on nuclear activities and environmental radioactivity, defines the framework of a system that is in of substantial security.
However, there are some problems to be solved and potentially critical situations are highlighted on which it seems appropriate to intervene.
Among these, the elements of uncertainty about the prospects for the realization of the National Repository of radioactive waste certainly take on importance, which condition the sector and impose choices that cannot be postponed for safety that increase the costs borne by the community.
Another important and potentially critical issue is the situation of insufficient staffing of the Inspectorate, undersized compared to similar European authorities. A condition destined to worsen in the short and medium term. In fact, in the next few years the Inspectorate will have to face a large generational change without the certainty of being able to guarantee the transfer of skills and knowledge to new staff units. Skills and knowledge that in nuclear matters are specific, not common, and require an essential training "in the field". Also on this front, the report, signed by the director of ISIN Maurizio Pernice, contains indications to ensure, in the future, the best efficiency and functionality of the ISIN.
